Session 12 Summary

The party head to the warehouse where their government contacts have been storing the supplies for the trek into the jungle where they find a couple of native arsonists.  The arsonists are captured, but not before they set the building on fire, causing it to burn to the ground courtesy of a near explosive spread of the fire shortly after it started.

They then question the prisoners in prison and discover that there may be some minor racism in Eleder, and that the Freeman's Brotherhood have taken over the South Arcadian Whaling Company.

After resting overnight, the party approach the Whaling Co., where they find Umagro the leader of the Brotherhood standing on the roof, with the group's government contact Jask held prisoner.  Umagro is speaking to a crowd of natives outside the compound, trying to incite a riot.

The party, being very careful to ensure that their friend is OK, charge in.  Jask has his throat cut and is dropped from the roof, and a significant fight follows, where Umagro is significantly underestimated, but dispatched in the end.  Titus manages to overcome the secondary bosses in the gatehouse on his own, while everyone else sorts out the rest.

Some minor information

The city of Eleder is abuzz with rumor.  Even a bunch of rude, violent murder-hobos can pick up some of the rumors effortlessly.  There are stories of four or five expeditions being mounted to find the ancient city of Saventh-Yhi.  There is an alliance of ex-slaves known as the Freeman’s Brotherhood, led by a bunch of known insurrectionists, hailed as heroes in the Outerwall slums (they Robin-hood it a bit with the other natives), and stirring up trouble.  And finally, you are going ot be leading (trailblazing, most likely I think was the impression I got on Sunday) an expedition on behalf of the government, and not the Red Mantis.

Eleder is a city of 8,900 ruled by Baron Utilinus with a GP cap for purchases of 5,600 gp.

7.Szraiels ‘Notes aboot Notin’

We needed to rest after the cannibals jumped us. We were lucky to survive that, just reinforces that it was an idiot idea to come to the cannibals known grounds to ‘surprise’ them. We should have stuck to plan and suckered them to the fungal isle. What can I do though when I am travelling with bigger suckers than mindless cannibals?

After some argument with the paladin I got to pearl dive, pretty sure in a day I could have scoured the whole bed but it seems this island warps reality and I only scratched its surface. What was worse I found nothing despite being able to do more in TEN solid hours than a couple cannibals could have done without water breathing in a hundred dives. At least the witch got to learn some spells and the real oracle could regain his healings.

The paladins really quite selfish, as a warrior he has little need for rest, taxes others buffs and healings then hordes all his healing for himself and then tries to hustle others who are low on spells on his account – still think he could be working for the enemy. It has to be than as surely no one could be that selfish or stupid. Then again he might just be insane – he goes on and on about monkeys, seems quite obsessed, then tries to infer we have some monkey fetish.

He refuses to engage in the needed moral debate that has to accompany any attempts at religious guidance or conversion despite often mumbling to himself that he wants to save us. I’d trust my soul with the witch more than with him, she at least is upfront and true. For the paladin, though he grovels well to iomede, there is probably a world of religious confusion in that young mammals head- I hear was kneecapped and left for dead by the ever ornery cinderlander, saved to be blessed as a lore oracle of all things by abadar, iori, and nethys only to take their gift falsely, turn his back and spurn them only to embrace iomede. But not her holy symbol, for he instead uses the hammer and scorns the sword. Really seems like a character that cannot be trusted, just out to further himself at all costs just paying the lip service required. I have to admit many of my compatriots of the bardic persuasion have pondered the blessing it would be to be blessed as a lore oracle, turn our back and engage in the bardic arts. Traditionally we are cut from a chaotic cloth but even then I don’t think I could bring myself to spit on the blessings of the gods its far less an insult to just dismiss them all when not chosen.

Meh. At least he now does funeral rites and I don’t have to sully the name of kukri with the souls of the worthless. Yet even that I don’t quite get. I put a butchers child to rest in the name of kukri. He puts murderous savages to rest in the name of his god. I have to wonder why you would do last rites to evil people in the name of your god.. surely that’s taking ownership or some sort of responsibility for those souls.. and thus their evil it might even be stealing them from another god, ripping those should from their freewill and choices in life. I cannot imagine a more deamonic act. I will have to ponder this further I have been focusing on my racial memories and in time I am sure all knowledge shall bloom in my head.

We passed the dryad my searching methodology had found and then made our way to the village. I believe this to be a bad move and pre-emptive but I cannot hold these cretins back. Even ron who normally has a good grasp of these things is impatient and seems to be purposefully flicking branches in my face the more I insist we go cross country. I have moved to the front again, dodging branches is tedious sport even for someone as obsessive as me, as I suspected the cannibal paths were trapped. Further a giant lizard with a putrid smelling mouth jumped us. Nothing I couldn’t handle. We found huts with skeletons that dorian soon blasted and the unfortunate remains of the poor lady ron harassed and insulted away from our initial camp. It saddens me more that he seems unwilling to morn her and admit to his part in her demise. We found a pot with bits of people in it, the hag tasted it .. I have to say it smelt nice but I cannot reveal my serpentine hand just yet. Best they think I a omnivorous a sexual creature for then their throats and their women will be less protected.

I burnt all the offensive things. We then explored the tower and found some women, both ron and dorian wanted to try and convert them but the paladin would have none of it and instead we imprisoned them in the butcher pits of the cannibals, he wouldn’t even let us feed them anything but woody plant matter. The witch levitated up to the top of the light house and returned with news that a bronze dish and everything was set up and that we could probably get it all working with relative ease. From up there she also spotted a covered pit we had all somehow wandered past and missed.

We climbed down only to be assailed by more undead travesties. After searching the alcoves they had hidden in I found some telling script that one of these was likely our once captain and that the woman with him was behind our shipwreck and is some kind of serpentine abomination. On further exploration we found a wondrous and gorgeous serpent folk temple. I had never felt so complete, exploring ruins, finding evidence that we once ruled all. So much lost it is such a shame what greed and falsity do to even the greatest of races. As we descended further we came across the den of a creature her minions called mother.

I formulated a quick yet sound battle strategy where we were to hold at a fork so we could attack and heal ourselves from two directions while they had to engage us one at a time. Those idiots didn’t listen and as was obvious from the start it turned to shambles. The mother was amazingly stealthy and quick on her feet and worst seemed to target me as priority. As all things faded I ssmirked for I knew with me gone the mammalss would fall.

6.Szraiels missed sess poem- Ode to the Kukri!

Can I explain this to you? Your eyes
are entrances the mouths of caves
Caves to collapse, wonderful interiors
vistas to view, kukri the gate
with artefact in hand I look and dream.

Like a dancer? Swift and quick
with deadly steps and intoxicating thrum
Sobs for mercy, such hum
one swish, it parts courage
lines cut through morning and sun.

Some kneel and pray? Matterless bay
some red liquid cooled black by legend
My fingers, their soil plowed
lightning speed, we come
All end beneath the centuries of earth.

The ghost? Ritual of blade
glimpses of the past now stolen
Much release, I did hack
hurried moves, placed it back –
A garment I am naked without.

5.Szraiels ‘Notes aboot Notin’

The lock is VERY impressive. It vexes me still. I was still pondering it when some little monkeys attacked us. The witch dropped them easily with a sleep spell and to the derision of all present I kept one alive. The fact she was a female seemed to create hysteria. Its good I suppose that they don’t realise I view them as little more than giant monkeys with about the same urges for theft and needless violence. That prioritising female life over male (as females can perpetuate and so are a greater life loss) was seen as unusual surprised me. Especially from the life oracle and the other oracle who now masquerades as a paladin. I have to wonder about the ethical fiber of these creatures and will need to make enquirys.
Further when we returned to camp the life oracle wanted to demean the life of the monkey by shaving it, something that would likely also traumatise it and end in slow death. Even without having read on the subject common sense would dictate that creatures with fur have it for a reason and likely need it – be it for warmth or protection from the myriad of bugs that plague us still everywhere we go. I disallowed such to continue. No others seemed concerned at the pending torture and death of a hapless creature.
I gave my friend and teacher Ishirou his loot and offered back the map, Ron came and assured he was short changed and knew not to complain. I feel bad for that and unlike the so called paladin or the others feel I will need to make amends for our groups breaking of our contract and subsequent theft of his share.
Ron was under the weather, karma I suppose, so I busied myself improving the camp yet again while the others lazed about. One evening a ghost appeared which we quickly surmised came from one of the ships we looted. I am glad it did not end in a fight but it made up my mind. If i learn a new talent it will be to imbue some of my latent magic into my weapons instead of wielding two or extending my archaeologists luck. Should more ghosts appear we will be harmless to them without magic. The skill will broaden my already varied arsenal.
The paladin is trying to assert himself more and more despite the current scheme of things working flawlessly. This will no doubt end in his death somehow or the parties demise or the loss of treasure gained through legitimate finds and not mass murder. I really have to keep them from the cannibals and themselves till rons bombs are better, the life oracles healing is better and the witch gains better spells.
We showed the picture in the locket to the ghosts physical remains and discounted the paladins idiot idea of leaving the locket. For someone with limited knowledge on such topics he tries to talk with great authority.
Again the paladin wanted to deviate from the plan. His better ‘plan’ .. Charging straight to the core of the island along trails. Not only would this give the cannibals a bearing on where our camp (and our charges were) it would also expose us to any traps and tricks and set up spotting positions they had. I have to wonder if he really is one of those anti-paladis I have read about. He seems to try too hard to appear good, be randomly destructive when he forgets himself, did nothing to fortify the camp and wants to lead the savages there.
Most disappointing was ron, he was swayed by the paladins off-putting smile and also wanted to charge into the centre of the island. Through basically stating I will go it alone if must they followed the plan we had from the start. The ‘paladins’ chaotic whimsy was averted again. I know the time will come when I will not be able to hold them from attacking the cannibals from a bad position I just hope I can hold them till they are powerful enough to succeed and coming from a direction where they won’t telegraph/message spell the location of our charges.
At the end of a trail we found a cannibal snare. It seems my instincts were correct. We found some camps, trashed by cannibals, and eventually came across a giant crab on a beach. Warily we watched it for some time after holding back the idiots from poking it. Once it seemed barely able to move I was ready to poke it but now the others were afraid. I marked it on my to do list and sadly was going around it with the others when thankfully Ron lost patience and bombed it.
Within was a eccentric tengu, I was glad as always wanted to learn the intriguing language, however once I tested him it turned out he was not half as mad as he pretended or half as dumb. On that I managed to secure his services for when we attack the cannibals.
We made it to the ‘stunted isle’ as I have come to call it. It’s an ideal place to ambush the cannibals. There is NO sign they come this way and I checked THOROUGHLY, its a single file slippery land bridge that is washed out at high tide. To fight them away from their comfort zone is a dream come true. As we camped and I dreamt of victory over cannibals we were yet again attacked while the ‘paladin’ watched us. Shocker lizards. Having learnt well from my last encounter I did nothing heroic to protect the witch and just focused on dropping them, the others did the same and soon we had them dead. After again getting past the idiot paladins suggestion we don’t check our flank and just charge across the islet we found another more fungus islet with a similar approach.
I do ponder what tituses game is. He was not on our ship, he was holding such a hammer as one couldn’t climb nor swim with. He appeared on the inside of the cove. He does nothing to fortify camp, he didn’t bury the first bodies we found, he goes against group decisions and established plans all the time, plans that have been and continue to work. He is not a source of moral guidance just one of chaos and disruption. He is against checking flanks, protecting our charges, being cautious and just wants to go straight to the cannibals down THEIR paths! I have to allow for the possibility that he is one of the cannibals and is trying to lure us into their clutches.
Alas my pondering was interrupted by an overgrown shipwreck. When we investigated we were confronted and defeated a vege man I found quite indescribably charming. After i explored we left across the 3 rope bridges only to be attacked. My luck was up this day and I managed to slay my 2 vege pygmies, one of the ones on titus, dorian and Helga and then finish of the last one on ron with a star. Pity I lost the star but I have to say if this keeps up I might ditch these mammals.
I piled up a bonfire on the vessel but it seems none of these hot brained mammals see the vision in attracting the cannibals across a closing one person wide slipway to a place they are unfamiliar to engage them. Alas plans that good are ignored its only a matter of time till we nap the dirt nap. At least when I turn to dust the great serpent shall region my soul with the aska and all my peoples.
